About the organisers

Chiara Singh (she/her)

Institute Development Associate, Jean Golding Institute

Chiara has been a member of the Jean Golding Institute, a central hub for data science and data-intensive research since January 2021. As Institute Development Associate, she develops and promotes the Institute’s interdisciplinary research portfolio through project management and event planning amongst other things. Chiara joined the University of Bristol in 2018, managing operations in the School of Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Engineering Mathematics. She has a degree in biology from Cardiff University where she studied the effect of climate change on parasites and is fascinated by the natural world. She participated in a study tour to Japan in affiliation with the Association of University Administrators to learn about Japanese-UK research partnerships and the HE sector. Cardiff University sponsored her to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education, Management and Leadership. As a creative collaborator she brings an awareness and understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion through reflective practice. Chiara has worked at Mother Teresa’s Home for the Sick and Dying in Calcutta and WOOFED (Worked On Organic Farms) throughout Australia and New Zealand. When she’s not getting her hands dirty in the garden, you can find her on a (socially distanced) dancefloor (preferably a festival field!),or attempting to recreate a beautiful Bob Ross landscape or cooking up a fusion feast!

Liz Wainwright (she/her)

Industry Partnerships Manager, School of Mathematics

Liz has worked with academics in the areas of mathematics, statistics, computer science and engineering since 2012 and currently manages industrial partnerships and collaborations in the School of Mathematics. As part of this role, she manages the industrial sponsors on behalf of the Compass – a £6.4m ESPRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Computational Statistics and Data Science which will train 55 PhD students and currently has 22 industrial and governmental sponsors.  She’s had a varied career at the University of Bristol: since joining as an Administrative Assistant she has held positions as Centre Manager, Deputy School Manager, Heilbronn Research Institute Manager, and has managed substantial research programme grants (=£10m). She is a passionate advocate for the power of mentoring and creating strong professional networks. She also mentors on the Horumar Programme (a development programme for Somali women in Bristol). Outside of work, she spends time battling the elements on her allotment in St Werburgs and spent the first lockdown trying (then failing, then trying…) to learning Python to make online games to play with friends around the UK.
